How to Choose a Commercial Roofing Company for Your Business

If you need help with your commercial roof you’ll want to hire a reputable commercial roofing contractor, but what should you look for? Here

Here are some tips and questions to ask:

1. Insurance:  Ask if the company is fully insured, what types of insurance they carry and how much insurance the workers on your roof will have. You do not want a contractor who can’t cover his or her own butt when it comes to damages that may happen during the life of your business.

2. Warranty:  Harvey from Premier Commercial Roofing in Fort Wayne Indiana told us to ask what type of warranties are offered with the work done, how long they last and whether or not there are any conditions on them. Protect yourself by asking for copies of all written material that you can take home to review at your own pace.

3. Liens:  Find out if there have been any liens filed against the contractor. Liens are claims for payment by companies or individuals who have done work on your business and were never paid (contractors, architects, engineers etc.) Liens show up as a legal claim against your property because the contractor has not been paid. You will want to find out if any of these liens exist and your best bet is to find out before you sign any contracts.

4. Insurance Claims:  Ask if the contractor can provide you with references of insurance claims they have handled for other customers. This gives you a chance to see how they handle an issue that matters most to small business owners, protecting their assets. You’ll also want to verify any claims that the contractor makes about their service and ask for references in each case.

5. Business Reputation:  Ask family, friends, neighbours and other business owners for recommendations. You can also check the company’s place on Google reviews BBB.org and Facebook pages to see if there are any complaints or compliments online. A quick background search of the company name along with “complaints” or “reviews” will yield basic tips on how other business owners feel about dealing with that company.

6. Company History:  Ask the contractor if they have been in business for a long time, are there any changes to ownership during that time? The longer they have been in business the more stability they have.

7. Employees:  Are all of the employees working on your job bonded, insured and registered with WSIB? This is important because if there are any damages to you or your property it will be covered by the insurance that the workers have purchased along with their employment. You do not want an uninsured worker falling off your roof and you not being covered for any damages.

8. References:  Ask for references and contact them to see if the contractor has shoddy workmanship or is hard to deal with. You can ask other companies who they use for commercial roofs in Toronto, Hamilton, Durham or Oshawa regions.

9. Licenses:  Do not forget to ask if the contractor is licensed for the type of work they are doing. Ask how long they have been in business, licensing information and verify it on your own. If your roof needs repairs or replacement make sure you hire a professional company who knows how to do their job properly.
